The Role of Yoga on Stress Management

In humans, the stress response is triggered by a reaction from the adrenal glands, which release cortisol and other hormones. This is the old-school “fight or flight response” that you may recall from biology class. It was important back in the day when you could be fighting for your life at any given moment. But for most people in modern life, there’s probably not as much reason for the stress hormones to kick into high gear. Yet, for many people who suffer from the impacts of stress, these hormones never shut off. This leaves you in a constant state of stress, with an overactive mind that won’t rest and a body that suffers everything from high blood pressure to an increased risk for heart disease. This mind-body response to stress needs a mind-body solution. And that solution is yoga. Yoga is an ancient practice that has been de-stressing humanity for thousands of years.
