Why You Can't Lose Weight - How Diets Can Make You Fatter

Weight loss is a topic that continues to baffle. Why is it that some people can easily maintain a healthy weight while others use all of their willpower to stick to a diet only to find the pounds stubbornly coming back? It doesn’t seem fair. Part of the reason why is that a person’s weight has a genetically determined set point that varies from person to person, and when their weight drops below that set point, they begin to burn fewer calories. A recent study followed the participants of the popular television show “The Biggest Loser.” Researchers found that the participants, who lost an average of 129 pounds each, had gained 70 percent of that body weight back after a period of six years. Furthermore, researchers found that the former show participants were burning an average of 500 calories less per day than people of similar age and weight who had not gone on a diet.
