Diabetes: What’s the Real Cause?

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is tied to the hormone insulin, and to insulin resistance―an incredibly common but little understood condition. How common? A 2002 study found 32.2 percent of Americans to be insulin resistant. Even worse, that percentage skyrockets to 70 percent in obese adult women! So what is this hormone that can affect the health of so many people? Basically, when you consume carbohydrates, the amount of sugar in your blood increases. Your pancreas recognizes this increase and responds by releasing insulin into your blood. It’s insulin’s job to tell your cells to open and take sugar in to be transformed into energy or stored. But for various reasons, your cells may stop responding, causing both sugar and insulin buildup in your blood. If not corrected, this condition can lead to diabetes.
